Why 64 Types?

Most personality tests give you one of 16 types. HEXACO gives you one of 64.

MBTI has 4 dimensions, each scored as one of two options: 2⁴ = 16 types. HEXACO has 6 dimensions, each scored as High or Low: 2⁶ = 64 types.

The difference is what those extra two dimensions measure.

HEXACO's six dimensions:

• H — Honesty-Humility: Sincerity, fairness, greed avoidance, and modesty
• E — Emotionality: Fearfulness, anxiety, dependence, and sentimentality
• X — Extraversion: Social confidence, boldness, sociability, and liveliness
• A — Agreeableness: Forgiveness, gentleness, flexibility, and patience
• C — Conscientiousness: Organization, diligence, perfectionism, and prudence
• O — Openness to Experience: Aesthetic appreciation, inquisitiveness, creativity, and unconventionality

Each dimension is scored on a 1–5 scale. A score above 3.0 counts as High (+), 3.0 or below as Low (−). This six-character code (like H+E−X+A−C+O+) maps to one of the 64 types.

Disposition comes from the first three dimensions (H, E, A). It reflects how you relate to other people.

Role comes from the last three dimensions (X, C, O). It reflects how you engage with the world.

How to Read Your Type

Your type label has two parts:

1. Disposition (first word): H, E, A combination. Reflects how you relate to people.
2. Role (second word): X, C, O combination. Reflects how you engage with the world.

For example, a Steadfast Explorer is H+E−A+ (Steadfast) combined with X+C−O+ (Explorer). Principled and emotionally stable, but curious and resistant to rigid structure.

A Warm Analyst is H+E+A+ (Warm) combined with X−C+O− (Analyst). Empathetic and accommodating, but systematic and detail-focused.

Beyond the Label: Continuous Scores

The 64 types are summaries. Two people with the same type can still differ.

Two "Warm Leaders" might score 4.8 and 3.1 on Emotionality. Both are "High," but barely crossing the 3.0 threshold and scoring near the top of the scale are different experiences.

HEXACO results include a radar chart showing exact scores across all six dimensions. The type is the summary. The scores are the actual profile.

Finding Your Type

The only way to know your type is to take the test. Self-guessing tends to reflect who you want to be rather than who you are. The HEXACO assessment uses 60 validated questions to measure each dimension.

The HEXACO model was developed by Kibeom Lee and Michael Ashton through cross-cultural lexical studies across seven languages (Ashton et al., 2004). The 64-type system on HEXACO Lab is based on this six-factor framework, mapping each combination of High/Low scores across all six dimensions to a unique personality profile.
